What exactly is Red Apple Day?
Red Apple Day is actually part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, as the apple is a large part of Bowel Cancer Australia’s image. The fruit is the charity’s logo, and has become the symbol of its fundraising activities on Wednesday, 21st June.
While the fundraiser encourages the eating of nutritious green and red apples, money will also be raised from Ribbons being sold and other themed fundraising activities. What do the experts say about an apple a day?
A study conducted in 2013 by the University of Oxford, found that the Victorians who introduced this saying were actually on to something. For those over 50, the researchers found that an apple a day can help with the prevention of heart disease.
Another study, this one from Cornell University, found that the skin of an apple could help kill cancer cells. Rui Hai Liu, Cornell associate professor of food science explained, "We found that several compounds have potent anti-proliferative activities against human liver, colon and breast cancer cells and may be partially responsible for the anti-cancer activities of whole apples."
