I’m married, now what? What to do after you’ve said ‘I do’

Feeling a little flat after the wedding hullabaloo? Hold up – there’s still heaps more to do after you’ve said ‘I do’. From changing your name to planning your future together, here are some tasks and considerations to keep newlyweds busy.

You spent months planning. All those tiny little details you were sweating over came together seamlessly. The ceremony was an absolute tear-jerker, and the party that followed was off the hook. But the planning isn’t done yet. You’ve still got a few post-wedding projects to keep you occupied…

Say your thank-yous

We hope you’ve been squeezing that stress ball, because you’re about to be in a world of hand-cramps after banging out your thank-you notes. Both tradition and good manners dictate these should be sent out within a month of returning from your honeymoon, so the sooner you start, the better.

Looking for a way to avoid the prospect of carpal tunnel syndrome? Unfortunately, preprinted or typed thank-you notes have always been – and still are – a major no-no. If you’re game though, you could use a digital writing desk (like Postable), which will allow you to quickly draft a bunch of ‘handwritten’ cards.

Change your name

Whether you change your name post-marriage is entirely up to you. If you do decide to change things up, you’ll need to do more than just make it Facebook official. If you’re double barrelling your last name or creating a hybrid from both of your surnames (we checked – it’s a thing), you’ll need to have this formalised through your state’s Births, Deaths and Marriages registry.

The process for changing a name varies depending on where the marriage took place, so check your state’s website.

Update your documents

To change your name on your other official documents, you’ll need your marriage certificate – either the real deal or a certified copy. You can get this at the Births, Deaths and Marriages office in your state.

If you’re booking your honeymoon, think carefully about which name you should be booking your flight under; old or new? And if you’re heading overseas, you’ll need to change your passport accordingly. Don’t get caught out like this Melbourne couple who were stung with an $8,500 airline fee when they tried to update their details to reflect a name change.

Here’s a handy checklist of other documents or places you’ll need to update after a name change:

  • Driver’s Licence
  • Doctor’s surgery or anywhere that has your medical records
  • Electricity, gas and water providers
  • Passport
  • Australian Taxation Office
  • Bank
  • Your mortgage provider
  • Landlord
  • Mobile phone provider
  • Internet provider
  • Breakdown cover (RACV, RACQ, NRMA etc.)
  • Subscriptions (magazines, Netflix etc.)

Insure your new life

Combing your incomes might let you take on larger financial commitments, like a mortgage or kids. It’s an exciting time, but it means that if something were to happen to you or your partner and one of you was left to manage on your own, the increased financial burden might be tough.

While no one likes to think about death, it’s worth considering its financial implications in a partnership. That’s why it’s important to consider life insurance for married couples. At Insuranceline you get a discount on your policy if you’re buying for two. Just get in touch with one of our friendly experts and they’ll be able to help you find the cover that’s right for you and your partner.

Plan something fun

You’ve honed your organisational skills over the months it took to plan your wedding – now’s the time to put them to good use. Finally, start planning something to look forward to, like a dinner party with friends or a weekend getaway. You’ll easily fend off those post-wedding blues.

Congratulations on the nuptials lovebirds, but it’s time to come back to earth and get yourself covered for your future together.

We’re here to help. Complete a life insurance quote to find the coverage that’s right for you and your plus one, and make sure your story is a ‘happily ever after’. Get in touch with us today.
