Like many other retailers from abroad, such as H&M, JD Sports and Tiffany & Co, Amazon has made its way to Australian shores. But what exactly does it mean for you and will online shopping save you money?
How has it already affected the Australian market?
It originally launched in December 2017, and with a range of categories from music, books and movies to sports, office supplies and kitchen and dining, it really is looking to challenge a great deal of retailers in Australia. These of course include major department stores like Myer and David Jones, and specialist outlets, such as JB Hi-Fi.
However the initial launch didn’t have the “big bang effect” that reflected the hype leading up to the launch, according to the Global Powers of Retailing 2018 report by Deloitte. While it may be starting out slow in Australia, the report suggested that the later part of 2018, in particular the lead up to Christmas, will be when we may feel Amazon’s presence more greatly.
Have online retailers already changed the way we shop?
The biggest drawcard of online shopping is the savings. Because online retailers don’t have to pay the costs of having a bricks and mortar store, like rent, electricity, staff wages etc, they can pass on the savings to the customer by providing cheaper goods.
Research shows that Australians have really adopted online shopping and it is set to continue to grow in the coming years. Just consider these statistics: it is estimated, according to a report from eMarketer, that ecommerce sales reached almost $33 billion in 2017, and is expected to continue to grow in the next few years.
Can Amazon Australia save me money?
Just like any online store, there are savings to be made if you find the right product, at the right price. That’s why it’s always important to price compare. Have a look at the prices that are offered in-store vs online to see if you can save.
Also consider factors such as postage. At the time of writing Amazon provides free delivery for orders over $49, so buying multiple items at once could be cost effective.
While online shopping has been a huge hit with Aussies, and with a little digging around you are bound to find some great offers on Amazon Australia, only time will tell whether this US giant will really shake up the retail market in Australia.
